| Am I required to have a business license if I have a home based-business? | ||||
| Yes. A business License is required to do business directly or indirectly in Canby. A business is described as: | ||||
| 1. Selling any goods or services. | ||||
| 2. Soliciting business or offering goods or services for sale or hire. | ||||
| 3. Use of any vehicle
or premises in the city for business purposes. Home-based businesses can be conducted in a home with the provisions that there are no employees, the residential character of the building is maintained, activity occupies less than one-quarter of the ground floor and that no outward appearance infringes upon the rights of neighboring residents. |

| Do I have to have a business license to hold a garage sale? | ||||
| Garage sales are not subject to licenses unless they operate for more than 14 days a year. | ||||
| As a self-employed business owner am I required to pay quarterly transit payroll taxes in addition to annual transit self-employment tax? | ||||
| Possibly. If you have a business and do not declare yourself on payroll, you must pay the quarterly payroll tax on any payroll paid out to your employees. You will also need to pay the transit tax on your net self-employment earnings as reported on Federal Schedule SE. However, If you have been declaring yourself on payroll you have already been paying the tax and therefore do not need to file an annual self-employment return for transit. | ||||

| Who is responsible for repairing and maintaining the sidewalk in front of my home? | ||||
| It is the duty of the land owner to maintain in good repair all sidewalks in front of, along, and abutting their land. A permit from Public Works is required before sidewalk repairs can be made. | ||||
| Do I need a building permit to build a fence around my yard? | ||||
| Building
permits are not required for fences up to 6 feet high. Maximum fence
height within 20 feet of the street property line is 3’6".
Maximum planting and fence height, above the curb, is 2’6" within
